How the UK football league system works
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have a distinct domestic structure. This guide puts the four systems side by side.
Four systems, one UK football view
The United Kingdom does not have one domestic league pyramid. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each run their own competitions, governing structures and promotion rules. That is why 433.uk keeps regional filters separate while still presenting every covered match in one match centre.

England: Premier League, EFL and the wider pyramid
The Premier League is the top level of men's club football in England. Its 20 clubs play each other home and away, producing 380 league matches in a season. Below it, the English Football League is organised into the Championship, League One and League Two, with up to 72 member clubs across those three divisions.
Promotion and relegation connect the levels. The precise play-off rules and club membership can change by season, so current fixtures and official competition rules should take priority over old diagrams.
Scotland: four SPFL divisions
The Scottish Professional Football League contains 42 clubs divided into the Premiership, Championship, League One and League Two. The Premiership is the top division. Promotion, relegation and play-offs connect the four levels, while the national pyramid continues below the SPFL.
Wales: the 16-club Cymru Premier
From the 2026/27 season the Cymru Premier has 16 clubs. Each club first plays every other club home and away. After matchday 30, the table splits into a Championship Race, European Challenger and Survival Zone, with the final positions deciding the title, European play-offs and relegation outcomes.
The Cymru North and Cymru South form the second tier. Licensing requirements matter as well as league position when clubs move upward.
Northern Ireland: NIFL leagues and cups
The Northern Ireland Football League organises the top domestic men's and women's league football. Its member clubs compete across the Premiership, Championship, League Cup and Women's Premiership, alongside development and academy competitions. The Premiership has 12 clubs for 2026/27.
