Welsh football league system explained
The 16-club Cymru Premier, its three-way split after matchday 30, and the promotion routes from Cymru North and Cymru South.
The 16-club Cymru Premier
The Cymru Premier expanded from 12 to 16 clubs for 2026/27. In the first phase, every club plays each opponent home and away. That produces 30 matches for each club before the table divides for the final phase.

How the three-way split works
The top six play one additional match against each other and finish after matchday 35. The bottom six do the same in the Survival Zone. The four European Challenger clubs play three further matches, ending on matchday 33.
The club finishing first is champion. Clubs placed second to sixth reach at least the end-of-season European qualification play-offs, while seventh place wins the final place in those play-offs.
Relegation, the play-off and licensing
The clubs finishing 15th and 16th are automatically relegated. The club in 14th enters a relegation play-off against the winner of a tie between the Cymru North and Cymru South runners-up.
Movement is not decided by the table alone. Tier-one licensing requirements apply to clubs seeking a place in the Cymru Premier, so an official competition decision should be checked before treating promotion as confirmed.
Cymru North and Cymru South
The second tier is regional: Cymru North covers the northern pathway and Cymru South covers the southern pathway. Their champions are the main promotion candidates, subject to licensing, while the two runners-up feed the top-flight relegation play-off route.
This regional structure reduces travel and connects the national top flight to the wider Welsh pyramid.
