The Northern Ireland Football League

The Northern Ireland Football League organises the top domestic men's and women's league competitions in Northern Ireland. For 2026/27, the men's professional pathway starts with a 12-club Premiership and a 16-club Championship.

Northern Ireland's competitions are distinct from the Republic of Ireland's league system. On 433.uk, the Northern Ireland filter follows covered Northern Irish competitions rather than treating the island as one domestic league.

The 12-club Premiership

The NIFL Premiership is the senior domestic division. The Championship winner can earn automatic promotion to it, while the Championship runner-up meets the Premiership's second-bottom club in a two-legged play-off.

Competition licensing still matters. A club must satisfy the applicable criteria, so promotion and relegation should be treated as final only when the league confirms them.

The expanded 16-club Championship

The Championship expanded to 16 clubs for 2026/27. Every club first plays the other 15 teams home and away, producing 30 matches. The table then splits into two groups and each club plays seven more games, for a 37-round campaign.

The champion takes the automatic promotion place and the runner-up enters the Premiership play-off. At the lower end, the bottom two are relegated and 14th place faces a play-off against the National Conference League runner-up.

The pathway below the Championship

The 2026 restructure places the National Conference League pathway at tiers three, four and five. It replaced the former Premier Intermediate League route and is intended to create a clearer progression between regional football and the two NIFL professional tiers.

NIFL also operates the Women's Premiership, development leagues and academy leagues. Those competitions have their own formats and should not be read as extra levels in the men's 12-plus-16 club table above.
