Scottish football league system explained
The four SPFL divisions, the 38-match Premiership split, promotion and relegation, and the new tier-five structure for 2026/27.
The 42-club SPFL
The Scottish Professional Football League is the national league body for 42 clubs. Its four divisions are ranked in this order: Premiership, Championship, League One and League Two.

The counts come from the SPFL's competition rules. Club membership changes through promotion and relegation, but the 12-10-10-10 structure remains the useful starting point for understanding the system.
Why the Scottish Premiership splits after 33 rounds
Each Premiership club first plays 33 league matches. The table then separates into a top six and a bottom six for five final rounds, giving every club 38 matches. Clubs only face teams in their own half after the split.
The split avoids a 44-match schedule in a 12-club division. Fixture reversals can be needed because the league aims to balance home and away games while protecting sporting and scheduling priorities.
Promotion, relegation and play-offs
The Championship, League One and League Two champions earn automatic promotion, subject to the competition rules and membership criteria. The bottom club in the Championship and League One is automatically relegated. Additional movement between divisions is decided through play-offs.
At the top, the Premiership's bottom club is in the automatic relegation position and the club in 11th enters the Premiership play-offs with teams placed second to fourth in the Championship. Licensing and membership criteria can affect eligibility, so the current official rules always take priority over a historic league diagram.
How League Two connects to tier five
The SPFL pyramid continues below League Two. For 2026/27, the Scottish FA approved three parallel tier-five leagues: the Highland League, Lowland League East and Lowland League West. The route into the SPFL includes pyramid play-offs and requires the relevant membership criteria.
